Mom and Dad will drink alcohol.  Seniors are more sensitive to alcohol’s effects. Senior’s metabolism breaks down alcohol slower than young people.   Alcohol stays in Senior’s system much longer.  Senior drink less water and the decrease in fluids, seniors have a higher blood alcohol content than younger people after drinking the same amount.  Aging also lowers the body’s tolerance for alcohol.   Seniors often develop a drinking problem even though their drinking has not increased.

The tolerance of the seniors bodies are not what they use to be.  Age makes the likely hood of these problems greater.  Drinking now may give you scleroses of the liver.  Cold medication that had no impact may now make it so you can’t drive.  Be very careful as your tolerances change.

• One 12-ounce can or bottle of regular beer, ale, or wine cooler
• One 8- or 9-ounce can or bottle of malt liquor
• One 5-ounce glass of red or white wine
• One 1.5-ounce shot glass of hard liquor

The type of alcohol will not change the impact on senior’s pills and the negative consequences.

Medications stay in the body for a long time. So if you drink alcohol hours after taking a pill it may still be a problem.  Be sure to read pill bottle labels and follow their directions.  If the pills warn you not to drink alcohol when taking the medicine, DON’T.   Get advise from you doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider whether it’s okay to drink alcohol while taking a certain medicine.
