Perfect for Mom with beginning dementia

I purchased this for my 76-year-old mother, who is in the beginning stages of dementia. Before this pill caddy, getting her to take her medicine was a nightmare. The pharmacy would actually deliver it in pre-made monthly planners. That should have made it so easy, but she always got the day wrong or the time of day wrong. Sometimes she would take three doses of the same medicine another day she wouldn’t take any. I chose this caddy, especially for the light up feature. I knew my mom would have trouble with anything gadgety and electronic and even having an alarm I was afraid she would still take the wrong pills but on this one the compartment of pills she is supposed to take specifically lights up at the time you set for it. I find it easy to program. The batteries (2AA) have lasted for an extremely long time, we have had it almost a year now. I was a little concerned about the price, but now I believe it was worth every penny. When the alarm goes off, you can just lift the lid and get the pills out or individual pill containers do come out. For my mother, she has problem with fine motor skills and it’s kind of annoying that the containers want to come out of the compartment. But it’s not a terrible problem. That actually might be an asset for some people, depending on the persons needs. I do wish the compartments were just a bit bigger. Her morning medication pills just barely fit. Even though the compartments are rather big.

I am very pleased with this product. For the day that it is required to take prescribed medication that chamber lights up. Since I have started using the Med-Q dispenser Med-Q I no longer have any difficulties taking my medication. The alarm is very handy. Purchased it through Amazon.

My teenage son must take medication twice daily to prevent major life threatening seizures. As he is preparing to leave home, it is absolutely necessary that he is successful in this task. Trying iPhone apps, he would just ignore it, hit snooze, and doses were missed. With this the alarm goes off softly, then again but a bit louder, then if not turned off, the alarm starts again in 15 minutes. He physically HAS to stop, get up or move, go to the sink counter, pop the dosage pill case (which is flashing red), and hit the button to turn off the alarm. There is no “I will do it later” and forgotten doses. With that said, the only reason I gave this a 4 and not a 5 is ironically for this point! Let’s say a couple of times per week he is leaving the house at 9:00 and will not be home at 9:30 when the med alarm goes off. There is no way to really take that dosage early. He has to disarm the pill case and then sometime after 9:30 am (the set AM alarm time) REMEMBER to turn the Pill Case back “on”. There should be the “logic” to just hit button to move to the next alarm. Also, the individual pill cases pop out of the base & our son a few times has pop the dosage case out, turned off the alarm, but moved the pill case some place else & did not take the dosage at the time of the alarm. The point of this process to take the medication when the alarm goes off, do not delay in taking the dose, because delay often equals missed dosage!!! This has been a training issue and a prep issue making sure a bottle of water & box of granola bars (food & water) are with the pill case so as there is no excuse to take the meds “later”. These issues of popping out the doses pill case & turning off the alarm to take pills “later” and not being able to turn off the alarm “early” before an alarm going off are the only reasons that I give this a “4 rating” instead of a “5 rating”.

NOT DOUBLE DOSES OR MISSED DOSES IN THE 2 MONTHS MOM HAS USED THIS!!!!

This was just what we needed.

We were looking for a lockout product but were not happy with those (price, size, requirement to be plugged in, requirement for a phone line connection or wifi), so tried this and found it was great. Here are key features that work for us:

1. Not super industrial looking and no cord to plug it. It can sit on the kitchen table and not take up lots of space or look like a big bingo machine! And it is blue – which she likes!

2. The flashing red light really helps. My mom has not taken the wrong meds or missed a dose in the two months we have had. She has no vision in one eye and low in the other.

3. The alarm every 30 minutes works well. If she misses it, it just keeps on alerting every 30 minutes until she responds. You can’t easily take the meds early. We thought this was a problem but have found that it is working out.

The things that we have to work around a bit:

1. I wish the boxes where a bigger. I have to very carefully load the boxes. When mom pulls out the boxes sometimes she spills them boxes which are loaded to capacity. And then she misses those pills and I find them later.
2. We added signs to help mom go through the steps needed. We have her drop the empties in a jar by the box. Then I don’t have her upsetting the box trying to get the boxes back in. It also helps as a visual clue about which one you are looking to light up and when it is time to restock.

I have attached photos to show the number of pills and how we added notes to help.

I bought this for my 28 yr old son, who, 3 times last year, has taken an accidental overdose by grabbing his PM pills in the AM.

The good points about this box are:
>It really does work great once you get it programmed.
> the alarm is audible around the house, but not super annoying
> it lights up the compartment of the pills you should take.
> it seems pretty well constructed.

Once you get this box set up, it does work very well and for someone who would also need the audible reminder, it would be great.

One container doesn’t shut easily without a bit of effort

Delivery was quick. Husband hasn’t missed or confused am with pm pills since using this dispenser! However, subtracted a star for two reasons:
1) containers need to be a bit larger – potassium and fish oil pills don’t leave room for much else. One container doesn’t shut easily without a bit of effort, even when empty. I hope we can get replacements.
2) online instructions aren’t detailed enough. After an hour gave up and tackled it the next day and somehow was able to get everything set. But don’t ask me what I did because I don’t think I could repeat it.

for the price i wish the pill box locked, you didn’t have to reset the time every time the batteries needed changed and i wish the batteries lasted longer. seem like about 3 weeks they have to be changed. i bought a rechargeable set of batteries and the charging station for this item. but over all i like it my grandfather is adjusting well to it. oh last issue is am and pm are not together, so lets say the item is facing you am would be the boxes below the time and above the time will be pm but not in order just takes a bit to get use to it thats all.

Great product. I would give it a 5 except directions for setting up twice a day dosing could be clearer.
My mother-in-law has multiple issues that require meds in order for her to remain medically stable. Unfortunately she also has memory deficits which interfered with her taking meds as prescribed. This unit has been an awesome tool in helping to keep her independent. Without it, we would be looking at declining medical issues and alternate living arrangements sooner than later.

Great tool for a parent who forgets to take her pills. The flashing light makes it clear which day to take and the alarm repeats until she remembers. Set up was pretty simple. I just wish the pill cups were a little bigger, because the supplements do not really fit. We still keep an extra box for them.
