Brushing your teeth, flossing, and rinsing regularly helps you maintain a healthy smile, and ward off gum disease. The accumulation of mouth bacteria not only affects your oral health, but also your joint health. A recent study in Science Translational Medicine found bacteria that causes gum disease may also trigger the onset of inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

The cause of  rheumatoid arthritis

Current research is close to finding the root cause of rheumatoid arthritis. Maximilian Konig,  researcher and Pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital, announced new findings in a statement.

RA is an autoimmune disease where in  the body’s own immune cells attack one’s joints

RA starts in small joints in one’s hands and feet.  It will cause inflammation, swelling, pain as well as a stiffness.   New Researcher has shown a correlation  between RA and gum disease.   Previous studies  has uncovered a connection with tooth loss and the risk of developing Rheumatoid arthritis.  In fact the worse the tooth loss, the greater the risk of RA in addition to other kinds of joint inflammation.

However, little is known about the specific bacteria in gum disease that may trigger the autoimmune inflammation.

A team of scientist have done research to find out if RA may have a bacterial cause, and whether the specific bacteria could originate from one’s own mouth.

Blood samples were collected from 200 Individuals that had gum disease as well as 200 healthy men and women.

In addition, samples of Silvia was collected form the spaces  between one’s  gums and their teeth were obtained from 10 individuals  with periodontitis, in addition to 10 healthy individuals.

What is Periodontis?
Periodontitis is “inflammation around the tooth”.  This serious gum infection thatwill cause damage the soft tissue and bone that supports and holds peoples teeth.

The researchers also obtained blood and joint fluid samples from another sample of approximately 200 people who met standard disease criteria for RA.

The composition of the gum fluid was analyzed to see how it differed between healthy people and those with gum disease. Similarities between blood and joint fluid samples of people with RA were also observed.

Fluids from Gum Disease

The findings revealed the gum fluid of people with gum disease contained high levels of citrullinated proteins. Citrullination is a protein in everyone. However, in patients with RA, the process is overactive, resulting in abnormal levels of the proteins. They’re known to cause an immune response in people with RA. There was lots of the proteins in the fluid.  It is common knowledge that people produce antibodies against these proteins.  These are known as anti-cyclic citrullinated peptides.

The studies have provided data that suggests the bacteria could trigger RA,  This is still being studied and is not definitive.  The Fact of the matter is that the onset of the disease can take 10 years or longer.  In is important to note that not everyone with gum disease develops rheumatoid arthritis.  This being said, and not everyone with RA has gum disease.

A better Understanding Is Needed

However, the findings do provide a better understanding of causes of autoimmune disease, like RA, which currently have no definitive cause.  In the meantime, brushing your teeth could help prevent tooth decay, and gum diseases, and potentially Rheumatoid arthritis .
