New Alzheimer’s Pills are being tested to see if they can cure or even slow down the progression.  The research has been promising.  Patients are using a smart pill box to remind them to take these special pills every day at the exact same time.  For accurate results the pills need to be taken exactly as they were told to.  This is difficult for any senior, let alone seniors in the early or middle stages of Alzheimer’s.  By the late stages, no type of pill reminder or pill dispenser will be of any use.

History of Alzheimer’s

The dictionary definition of Alzheimer’s is: ” Progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. It is the most common cause of premature senility.Alzheimer’s still has no cure, but two different types of drugs can help manage symptoms of the disease”.

It is named after disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer.  Dr. Alzheimer studied  the brain tissue of a woman who had died from mental illness.  Her symptoms were the typical Alzheimer’s symptoms.  Memory loss, language problems, and unpredictable behavior.   He found many abnormal clumps called, amyloid plaques.  He also found tangled fiber bundles.  The plaques and tangles are the main physical features of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s Pills can help manage symptoms in some people but there there is no cure for this devastating disease. Alzheimer’s drugs, with some people, help manage memory loss, thinking and reasoning problems.    Alzheimer’s pills must be taken exactly as prescribed to work.  A smart pill box or pill reminder is crucial to help make sure you stay on schedule.

 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Cholinesterase inhibitors.   Alzheimer’s harms the brain is by decreasing the needed levels of acetylcholine.  Cholinesterase inhibitors raise the amount of acetylcholine in the brain.  They can’t reverse Alzheimer’s disease but can stop the progression in many people.
The three Most Common:
  • Donepezil (Aricept) is the only Alzheimer’s drug approved to treat all stages of the disease.
  • Galantamine (Razadyne) is approved to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s.
  • Rivastigmine (Exelon) is approved for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.

The entire medical community is desperately trying to  find new treatments for Alzheimer’s  There are trying the “BIG THREE”, to stop,  to slow or even prevent. It is sad that drugs that seem promising  will take years before they are available.  As C.Everett Copp, retired Surgeon General of the United States said, “Medication doesn’t work if you don’t take it.  With the normal challenges of medication with seniors, Alzheimer’s carries it to a new level.  The Alzheimer’s Association recommends some type of smart pill box or pill reminder as your first decision in navigating the Alzheimer journey.

Researchers are making progress in understanding  what goes wrong with Alzheimer’s.  These are the next-generation of  drug therapies

 Solanezumab is a  antibody that lowers the level of beta-amyloid in the brain

Beta-secretase enzymes that  makes it possible for beta-amyloid to form.

Tau protein is the main cause of tangles.
